So what a quick week i lost track of what you know and what you dont. But I figure that I will make up for a short letter with lots of pictures. First off we went to Lucena this week for zone conference. I got a bunch of the dear elder letters you have sent lately thank you very much thats a good update on things going on in the Pre earth life. Going to Zone Conference is for sure always a great experience one of the weird things is seeing people going home because all those going home bear there testimony at the end. Elder a Sister Packer the office couple are even going home next month. But it reminds me to put it into perspective and remember my days are numbered here. The area did have a whole lot of surprises this week were working toward the next couple of weeks with weddings and baptisms coming up.
So We have a rat problem in our apartment Elder and Sister Gines came and fixed all the holes in our window screens last week thinking that would fix it but the very next night he chewed a new hole in a metal screen. We see him from time to time and he looks like a species of cat with how big he is. So we got some rat poison and because the bag was pretty good sized I put half of it on a little tray on the floor taped up the bag and set it on the shelf. He not only ate what was on the floor but he climbed up on the shelf and tore open the bag and some how he still lives. They are invincible.
Other than that Angelo who I told you about last week has been working to midnight everynight and we havent got to visit him. But brother Audy our other new investigator is doing great. We do have a little problem with him making commitments though he says that if he makes a committment to us hes also making a commitment with god and that makes him scared. After that we tried to tell him thats a good thing to make a promise to god. Of course hes new to a lot of the things we tell him but whats great is hes reading even though hes super busy. So we just sitting back and watching his conversion steps at a time. The rough thing is also focusing on his wife his house is so small theres no room to sit except the stairs behind us so shes sitting in the background a lot. But we really hope that they can be converted as a family.
This week I have been reading at the end of alma and into helaman it says it talks so much up losing pride and not getting set on riches. In 3 Nephi 13:21 it says “For whereever your treasure is, there will your heart be also” Im not sure all the ways to lay our treasures up in heaven but I know that through our daily actions and always keeping our priorities straight we are preparing for that day when we will stand before Jesus Christ. Even though were just 2 missionaries against the town of Calauag we go out everyday ready to do our part and let heavenly father do the rest. Thanks for everything.
Every morning we go jogging on by the ocean. Its not as relaxing as the sounds because were dodging tricycles and running through fish markets but its an adventure
Even though my eyes are closed heres a quick glimpse of a church in the Philippines
Well dearest family I write to you on this scorching hot summer day in the Philippines. I know I have told you before about the weather but I figure its worth mentioning as a drop of sweat just fell from my face. Dont worry Im drinking water like a Camel. Other than that the work is awesome. Me and Elder Valdez are the best missionaries in all of San Pablo well maybe I shouldnt boast about us but if you are familiar with Alma in chapter 26 we “dont boast of ourselves but in our god. For in him we can do all things.” the scripture goes something like that ha. We have a really good time and Calauag is a great area. Im grateful the lord sent me here. We were supposed to have a baptism on Saturday but sister Maricar ended up relapsing on coffee so we pushed it back a week. She felt really bad when she came out of the baptismal interview. But she says it was tears of joy. Shes still really strong though and is looking forward to her baptism. We are also still trying to get the marriage worked out with Tatay Crisanto he actually got married by the mayor but his wife was only 15 at the time which makes it unofficial on church records so at this particular time we are working with 6 couples who need to get married so in the next few weeks we are going to have a mass wedding. The bishop here is great we really enjoy working through him and hes helping us a lot with trying to figure out the papers and different requirements for marriage where neither of us know a whole lot about how the government works here.
But rather than go on about things that happened I want to introduce you to some of our new investigators.
First we met Brother and Sister Angelo and Dona this week. They have been together for 3 years (not yet legally married) we met them at a little roadside store and Brother Angelo is a tricycle driver he actually knows us because we have rode in his tricycle a few times but this was the first time to share so we went to the appointment and he didnt know where his wife was but we taught him anyways. He is one of the most humble people I have ever met and I almost immediately developed a love for him. As we sat down in his one room dirt floor home he told us about how three years ago he built his house all by himself and back them they borrowed dishes from the numbers. He then opened his arms and said look what I have now. In his eyes he was rich and even blessed he said. I really hope and pray for him to search our message.
Besides that theres not a whole lot i can say but that “WE ARE FIXED IN OUR MINDS WITH A DETERMINED RESOLUTION” (Alma 47:12) We go out each day remembering whose work this is and that we are not alone. This week I will tell you something i changed when I bear my testimony instead of saying “I know the church of Jesus Christ is true” I tell them the “Church of Jesus Christ is true” because it is. I know that god helps us through our trials and that he is mindful of us. I promise that he answers prayers. After all that we go through in our trials we are better than before. I love you all have a great week.
Calauag is awesome it reminds me slightly of home. Its just a little down established here on the railroad theres actually some areas here that are only accessible by the rail road. So its fun riding trollies up and down the rails from appointment. Which in the end costs 10 pesos or in dollars almost a quarter. The people in Calauag are a little more secluded then they were in Nasugbu therefore it is more of a rare sight for them to see a foreigner. The place is great though and the peaceful walks through the hilly fields are fun. Me and Elder Valdez have done a lot of great things and next week I think were going to start teaching a english class once a week as a finding idea. I think I mentioned here that our bishop is a super Jolly guy and we have a lot more coordination with him they we had in Nasugbu. Our house here is actually really big we have 3 bathrooms one is mine one is Elder Valdez and one is haunted really its kind of seems like Draculas castle sometimes because all the walls are tiles and its got some weird pillars and then the lights. Also we have a rat problem. Were making a plan to catch him though. Other than that I dont know what else to say. In the morning we go jogging along the beach. Sounds like a dream right ha.
So me and Elder Valdez are hoping that we both end up staying in this area for awhile at least till May because his birthday is only five days before mine on the 30th. So hopefully the members throw us a party lol. Were actually really close with the members here even though hes only been here a month and me a week.
So we are getting excited to harvest here in Calauag we just need to resolve some concerns like have a wedding which Bishop Clark is helping us with. I think were going to hold a mass wedding and have 4 couples married at once. Thats one problem in the Philippines its net really looked down upon in this cultural to just move in with somebody. Right now we have some really cool investigators one of them has only had a book of mormon for a week and a half and is already in Mosiah despite the fact that he only has a fourth grade education and cant read very fast. Whats even cooler is that he really understands he tells us about it also. last night we taught him and stop to ask if he had any questions. I think we waited for almost 3 full minutes without him saying anything and then he said I dont have any questions we knew that we could testify to him he understands our lessons and the scriptures because the spirit enlightens him and helps him. Its funny to because he gave us a referral to teach his neighbor and now they are racing to see who can finish the book of mormon first. I dont know where these investigators came from but Im grateful that I was called here to teach them. I know that the spirit helps us understand the truthfulness of the gospel and that If we are truly seeking heavenly father will help. As long as we bear with patience our afflictions. Thus ended the reign of the judges. Amen.
Love you all,
Elder Polatis 🙂
By the way to all of you if you send a package one of the best things I can think of is small little wall pictures of book of mormon stories and prophets, temples, first vision, etc. Our investigators and members love it. Its the coolest thing to walk up to a little shed in the middle of a rice field and see a picture of Nephi or Jesus Christ on the door
This area is actually really nice im glad to be out of the clustered city in Nasugbu. As you can see from the scenary theres also a lot of wildlife. One of our investigators has a pet snake in a bucket. He said its poisonous but you can see where he took pliers and removed the fangs. Also this is Elder Valdez hes a funny kid, great companion siya
Well dearest family a new chapter in my mission begins im in the Calauag area its under the Quezon province if you google it you will see that I went from one end of my mission to the other. The area is awesome and the bishop is the most Jolly person I have met in my whole mission. Its really fun to talk to him actually. Bishop Clark has been the bishop for 9 years and before that he was the branch president for 10 years. So for 19 years he has been in charge of this area. Its a great place and very big. In my last area we had a 7/11 and a Jollibee and one more fast food restaurant here in Calauag theres nothing. But they do have a chapel rather than a meeting house. The Chapel is very ineresting it has two floors. Anyway Calauag is full of happy people one of the older priesthood members probably told me 10 times yesterday that I look like Redford White. The best part is the people are so loving we have a great time. Im still a trainer though but he has been her for one transfer so im just finishing the training. My companions name is Elder Valdez and he is great I have already learned so much from him. The funny thing is I replaced one of the Elder Boyd in this area we both came to the Philippines at the same time. So we know each other really well.
We have some really good investigators here. The coolest experience so far is the one of our investigators who we havent even taught the Word of Wisdom to yet but he already told us hes going to stop selling cigarettes and coffee from the store he owns because he knows its not allowed in our church. Its really crazy to see how willing people are to make such big changes in there life for our heavenly father. So we our actually a little short on time cause we have an appointment coming up so I will let you know all about Calauag next week other than that enjoy the pictures and I love you all.
Heres me and Elder Valdez riding on the tracks and also me at a little housing development.
